As part of the extensive redevelopment at Belfast International Airport, OHM Engineering was appointed to carry out critical construction and specialist fit-out works in the new Duty Free area. Operating within a live airport environment, our team successfully delivered complex, precision-based tasks while adhering to strict time constraints and noise restrictions. Our scope included the following:
To provide long-term durability and resistance to damage in high-traffic back-of-house areas, we supplied and installed over 800 square metres of stainless steel chequer plate wall protection. This extensive application ensures the facility remains robust and easy to maintain behind the scenes.
We completed sensitive demolition work in the existing departures area, including lifting and reinstating sections of the concrete floor. All demolition and heavy works were carried out exclusively during night shifts to ensure zero disruption to airport operations and passengers. Our team also created and formed structural openings in existing walls to facilitate new layouts.
OHM Engineering completed all first and second fix joinery, from internal framing to final finishes, maintaining high standards of craftsmanship throughout. We also managed the careful removal of existing curtain walling and prepared the area for the installation of new glazing — again conducted out of hours to avoid interfering with the airport’s operational schedule. All debris was cleared overnight to ensure uninterrupted daytime service.
A standout element of the project was the design, fabrication, and installation of a bespoke Feature ‘Centre Piece’ Sculpture for the new Duty Free area. Constructed from 180x180mm steel box section, the sculpture spanned an impressive 21 metres and weighed 12 tonnes. To accommodate logistical constraints, the piece was designed in modular sections that could be hand-carried up stairwells during overnight hours. Our in-house team devised a bolt-free assembly system, allowing the sculpture to slot together seamlessly on-site before being welded, polished, and painted to deliver a striking, clean-finished centrepiece.
