Belfast Airport - New Duty Free

As part of the extensive redevelopment at Belfast International Airport, OHM Engineering was appointed to carry out critical construction and specialist fit-out works in the new Duty Free area. Operating within a live airport environment, our team successfully delivered complex, precision-based tasks while adhering to strict time constraints and noise restrictions. Our scope included the following:

Stainless Steel Chequer Plate Wall Protection – 800m²

To provide long-term durability and resistance to damage in high-traffic back-of-house areas, we supplied and installed over 800 square metres of stainless steel chequer plate wall protection. This extensive application ensures the facility remains robust and easy to maintain behind the scenes.

Demolition and Concrete Floor Works – Out of Hours Execution

We completed sensitive demolition work in the existing departures area, including lifting and reinstating sections of the concrete floor. All demolition and heavy works were carried out exclusively during night shifts to ensure zero disruption to airport operations and passengers. Our team also created and formed structural openings in existing walls to facilitate new layouts.

1st and 2nd Fix Joinery & Curtain Walling Preparation

OHM Engineering completed all first and second fix joinery, from internal framing to final finishes, maintaining high standards of craftsmanship throughout. We also managed the careful removal of existing curtain walling and prepared the area for the installation of new glazing — again conducted out of hours to avoid interfering with the airport’s operational schedule. All debris was cleared overnight to ensure uninterrupted daytime service.

Design, Fabrication & Installation of Feature Sculpture

A standout element of the project was the design, fabrication, and installation of a bespoke Feature ‘Centre Piece’ Sculpture for the new Duty Free area. Constructed from 180x180mm steel box section, the sculpture spanned an impressive 21 metres and weighed 12 tonnes. To accommodate logistical constraints, the piece was designed in modular sections that could be hand-carried up stairwells during overnight hours. Our in-house team devised a bolt-free assembly system, allowing the sculpture to slot together seamlessly on-site before being welded, polished, and painted to deliver a striking, clean-finished centrepiece.

Belfast Airport - Lagan Bar

OH&M are proud to be undertaking another significant project at Belfast International Airport, operating within a fully live and operational airport environment — a setting that demands precision, planning, and the highest standards of safety and coordination.

Working airside and landside within an active airport is no ordinary task. Every stage of the programme must be carefully scheduled around passenger movements, airline operations, security protocols, and strict time constraints. Our team is experienced in delivering works within complex, high-traffic environments, ensuring minimal disruption while maintaining efficiency and compliance at every level.

This latest project marks the end of an era for the well-known Lagan Bar. Hoarding installation is now underway, creating a secure and controlled working zone ahead of a comprehensive internal strip-out, which will commence shortly.

The strip-out phase will involve the careful removal of existing fixtures, fittings, services, and finishes in preparation for the next stage of redevelopment.

Belfast Airport - Storeroom

OH&M have successfully completed another high-quality refurbishment project at Belfast International Airport, delivering works within a live operational environment.

The project began with the full strip-out and safe disposal of existing walls, ceilings, and flooring. New metal partitions were installed, fully dry-lined and fire-stopped to meet the highest standards. Ceiling systems were replaced, incorporating new lighting, fire alarms, and associated services.

Walls were upgraded with aluminium checker plate protection, precision-cut and fitted for durability, while the floor was levelled using self-levelling grout before the installation of new commercial vinyl flooring.

The final phase included the installation of new doors, fridges, and equipment — resulting in a fully refurbished, high-specification storeroom ready for operational use.

Belfast Airport - Starbucks

Work continues to progress strongly at Belfast International Airport, with OH&M’s skilled workforce delivering another phase of works within a fully operational, live airport environment.

The former Starbucks unit has now been completely stripped back to shell. This included the careful removal of all internal walls, ceilings, floor finishes, fixtures, fittings, and furniture. Every element was dismantled and extracted in a controlled and methodical manner to ensure programme efficiency while maintaining the highest standards of safety and compliance.

Operating within an active airport presents unique logistical challenges. Works were undertaken across both day and night shifts to minimise disruption to passengers, airlines, and airport operations. Passenger safety and flow remained the primary priority at all times, with strict segregation of work zones and carefully managed material transfers from airside to landside areas.

With the strip-out phase now complete, we have progressed into the refurbishment and new build stage of the project.

New stud wall layouts have been meticulously planned, set out, and installed in accordance with the latest design specifications. All dry lining and fire stopping works are being carried out directly by OH&M employees, ensuring full quality control, programme certainty, and adherence to fire safety regulations.

Our in-house capability allows us to maintain consistency across all phases of delivery — from strip-out through to fit-out — while operating seamlessly within one of Northern Ireland’s busiest transport environments.

Belfast Airport - Arrivals

Continuing our partnership with Belfast International Airport, OHM Engineering was commissioned to undertake a series of interior enhancements in the busy Arrivals Area. With a focus on durability, passenger safety, and premium finish quality, our team successfully delivered the following scope of work:

Supply & Installation of Bumper and Foot Rails Throughout

We installed a comprehensive system of stainless steel bumper and foot rails across the Arrivals Area. Designed to protect walls and fittings from the constant movement of luggage trolleys and foot traffic, these additions improve safety while preserving the interior finish of this high-traffic space.

Supply & Installation of Stainless Steel Skirting and Corner Protection

To further reinforce interior surfaces, we supplied and fitted custom stainless steel skirting and corner protection throughout the area. These durable, hygienic, and low-maintenance finishes were chosen for their clean look and resilience, helping maintain a sleek, modern appearance despite daily wear and tear.

Stainless Steel Handrail Installation Along 50m Ramp

OHM Engineering fabricated and installed a continuous stainless steel handrail on both sides of the 50-metre ramp in the Arrivals Area. Engineered to meet accessibility standards and enhance passenger safety, the handrails provide essential support while blending seamlessly into the airport’s design aesthetic.

Construction of New Reception Desk and Currency Exchange Booth

We also supplied and fitted a custom-built reception desk and fully enclosed the new Currency Exchange Booth with high-grade glass and surrounds. This installation balanced security, visibility, and functionality—ensuring that staff are protected while offering passengers a professional and welcoming service point.
